IL TOMBOLO
Il tombolo è un merletto lavorato su un cuscino cilindrico con i cosiddetti “fuselli”, bastoncini di legno di ciliegio attorno ai quali si avvolge un filo di cotone. È una delle lavorazioni più antiche (seconda metà del ‘400) e rappresenta l’espressione più alta dell’artigianato artistico abruzzese. La tradizione del merletto è ancora viva in molti centri dell’Abruzzo, in particolare a: Pescocostanzo, con il museo e la scuola comunale del merletto a tombolo (1992); Scanno, dove arricchisce il tipico abito femminile; L’Aquila, se ne fece in passato vera e propria opera d’arte.
THE TOMBOLO
Tombolo is the name for a lacework woven on a cylindrical cushion from cotton threads twisted round wooden sticks – known as “fuselli”. It is one of the oldest handwork (second half of the XVth century) and is the highest expression of Abruzzi’s artistic handicrafts. The Tombolo tradition is still alive in many parts of the region; we find it in: Pescocostanzo thanks to a Museum and a Tombolo lacework school (1992), Scanno where the Tombolo enriches the traditional woman costume, L’Aquila where the Tombolo became a work of art.
